Artificial Intelligence vs Humans
In a recent landmark study conducted by LawGeex, the company pitted its Artificial Intelligence (AI) solution against twenty human top lawyers in a contract review challenge.
LawGeex’s AI has been trained by using machine- and deep learning technologies on tens of thousands of non-disclosure agreements (NDAs). The humans consisted of law firm associates, sole practitioners, in-house lawyers and General Counsel, all with extensive experience.
Their task was to review five NDAs and identify 30 legal issues within four hours. Not only did the AI achieve an accuracy level of 94%, compared to the humans’ average accuracy level of 85%, it also completed the task in 26 seconds. The average time among the humans was 92 minutes, the longest time taken 156 minutes and the shortest 51 minutes.
At the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2018, Jack Ma, co-founder and executive chairman of Alibaba Group, spoke about the future of education. He predicts that if we do not change the way we teach, we will be in trouble 30 years from now. We give our kids a knowledge-based education, but we can not teach them to compete with machines. Instead, they should be learning soft qualities that machines can never catch up with, like believing, independent thinking, teamwork and care for others.
While Ma believes that AI and robots are going to kill a lot of jobs in the future, he also thinks that AI should support human beings and that technology should always do something that enables people, not disable people.
Even though it was a grand slam for the AI in LawGeex’s study, us humans should not worry about losing our jobs just yet. Instead, we should see the opportunity in using AI as a tool, enabling us to focus on tasks that require the emotional aspect of a human brain.
